It Is Not About The Dentists

PLEASE don’t let me fall back into this awful pit of being afraid to go to the dentist.  My overall health also depends on it.

Howell, MI

My first experience with a dentist was when I was two.  He dropped an amalgam filling down my throat and then SPANKED ME when I vomited.  Most of my childhood dentistry experiences were painful and I decided then that I hated dentists.  Even as an adult I loathed dentists and their sadistic approach to me.  I chose to quit going to dentists and did not see a dentist for over eleven years.

….Please reconsider you actions and allow dentists like [Name Withheld] to allow fearful patients to be treated with dignity and without pain, shame, and rough handling so they can receive the treatment they badly need.

I beg you to reconsider you decision to end this type of sedation…

I cannot begin to tell you what the use of Oral Conscious Sedation has meant to me.  I had not been able to go to the Dentist for years without having a full blown panic attack.  Unless you have ever experienced this you may understand what a terrifying experience this is.  The fear.  The tears.  The trouble breathing.  The embarrassment and humiliation of being a full grown adult and feeling like a two year old, with absolutely no control of yourself or the situation.  So I suffered for years.

….Therefore, I am begging you, please reconsider your stand on this “pending legislation”, as it could very well translate to ‘impending suffering’ for people like me.

As a 55-year-old woman I am at the age when it is very necessary to have dental work done.  Without oral sedation, I would be deeply traumatized by this work.  I hope you will reconsider such an outlandish proposal.

I was recently a patient for extensive dental work.  I had multiple extractions, multiple fillings and other work done.  If it had not been for the conscious sedation, I would have never attempted this work.

I was given very specific instruction as to when to take the sedation pill, when to arrive for the procedure and what I could and could not do.  Information on not being left alone when I returned home was also very specific.  While I was in the office, I was never left alone.  There was always someone in the room with me.  The attending staff constantly monitored my heart rate and blood pressure.  I never felt as if I was in any danger during or after the procedure was completed.  Even after I arrived home, a staff member called me at least three times to make sure I was ok and everything was going the way it should be.

I am in full favor of the continuation of conscious sedation at the General Dentistry level.  My experience was safe, favorable & comfortable.  I, as a patient, want to continue to exercise my God given right to choose not [to] be relegated to a certain few oral surgeons.

My visit to you alleviated years of suffering, anxiety and anguish over my teeth.  Anyone who has put off dental work because the dentist is not their favorite person to visit can relate to my story.

…It is now a few weeks after my procedure and I am completely healed.  My mouth has never looked or felt so great.  You have given me a new confidence that I have never had, not to mention I can finally eat without pain.  You all will never know how deeply you have affected my life.

The combination of a safe procedure and a caring family dental practice has allowed me to finally have regular affordable dental care without serious emotional trauma.  This would have been unthinkable only a few years ago.  I don’t want to lose it.

I am a 59 year old, educated professional whose past dental experiences left my teeth in complete disrepair, in fact I hadn’t visited a dentist in over 25 years….Then in 2006, I started hearing commercials on sedation dentistry and vowed that I was going to face my fear and do this for ME!  It was the best decision I ever made!

Oral Conscious Sedation is the only way I am able to attend some appointments.  Without this service, undoubtedly, I would not have been able to save my natural teeth.

Conscious sedation has been and should continue to be the choice made by a patient and his/her dentist. As long as a dentist is legally trained and up to date, patients have been up front with their medical history then it isn't up to any board, state or entity to make such a determination as whether to sedate or not to sedate. This issue is a public affront to the intelligence, feelings and fears of dental patients and the dentists treating them.

This is a great service to dental phobics. However, women must make sure there is a female attendant with them at all times and I do mean at all times so no sexual abuse can ever happen. Generally speaking, women are too trusting and must be protected.
