In A Nutshell: What the ADA Proposes

In a nutshell:

1.       for Anxiolysis (to be called “Minimal Enteral Sedation”):

(a)      16 hours didactic (Page 13 of proposed Teaching guidelines)

(b)      Dentist must remain in operatory the entire time (Page 7 of proposed Use guidelines: http://www.ada.org/prof/resources/positions/statements/proposed_anesthesia_guidelines.pdf). 

2.       for Oral Conscious (to be called “Moderate Enteral Sedation”):

(a)       60 hours didactic and must include IV training (Page 15 of proposed Teaching guidelines)

(b)       10 LIVE patients (Page 15 of proposed Teaching guidelines)

(c)       Dentist must remain in operatory the entire time (Page 9 of proposed Use guidelines: http://www.ada.org/prof/resources/positions/statements/proposed_anesthesia_guidelines.pdf).

(d)       1:1 to 1:3 faculty-student ratios (Page 16 of proposed Teaching guidelines)

The current Teaching guidelines in a nutshell:

1. Anxiolysis (dental license only, except WV requires a 6-hour certificate)

2. Oral Conscious (18 didactic hours and 20 patient experiences, observed experiences are fine)

            (a)         Monitoring by certified team member is fine.
